About Us

Who We Are

Atlas Weavers is the premier shop for authentic Moroccan decorative rugs and tapestries. As native Berber immigrants in the U.S., it is our mission to bring the rich tradition and culture of the Berber people into Western living spaces. We work with many rug retailers and interior designers as a supplier of 100% authentic Moroccan imports.

Each Atlas Weavers rug is woven by family women in our community. We keep alive centuries-old traditions, using 100% natural spring wool and native dyes. In our online shop you will see various sizes and designs available. We also work with our customers who are looking to customize design or dimension. Atlas Weavers is committed to delivering beautiful long lasting textiles. By doing so, we are passing our tradition on to your home.

Our Designs

The symbolism of Berber textiles is often referred to as the “Infinite Rapport,” meaning the pattern and spirit of each rug extends beyond its physical borders. It is from a visual language of dark diamonds on ivory white that we communicate with the modern world. Wool rugs are simply the medium of our expression. Many Berber carpets show shifts in pattern reflecting a change in life events or weavers, or spontaneous creative expression. The weavers believe the rugs are imbued with a spirit from the artisans imprint or from the living nature of the wool. And they therefore resist monitoring of their laborious work. Berber rugs become prized possessions and are considered part of the family. To help our families flourish, we provide a school and teacher so weavers’ children learn to read and write.

History

By Roz,

"Language is the essence of one’s ethnicity, one’s roots. That’s why my father wanted me to learn how Berbers communicate. When I was in fourth grade, he sent me to live with my Aunt in Tazekka, & family who moved to Ifran city in the high mountains, the area now known as the Middle Atlas. An artisan weaver, she tasked me with measuring the living rooms of her customers. With pride and curiosity, I walked heel-toe across the rooms just as my aunt taught me. She and her artisan friends wove the most beautiful rugs. I watched them work the looms, sometimes pulling thread gracefully and other times forcefully. So while I learned the spoken language of the Berber, I also learned the visual language.

"I decided to go back to my Berber roots and be more creative in design & weaving, and create the best imaginative designs, and keep the tradition of this fine artistic bohemian textile and rugs.

"Originally my Idea of “Atlas Weavers” the Logo “Aw” was an idea to share this art & it’s abstract meaning with the world, keeping the tradition. As well help eliminate the poverty in my community, create more jobs and find new market.

"As a Moroccan American and Berber, I am committed to reducing illiteracy in Atlas Mountain communities. Every commission brings me closer to this dream."
